Warsaw Summer Jazz Days 2004 photo Oiolosse

Urszula Dudziak, Pedro Gonzales nad Motion Trio gave concert in the Saturday "Wieczór Filmoteki Narodowej", ending this years Warsaw Summer Jazz Days festival.

Listeners gathered on PKiN yard ovated their improvisations inspired with Silent Movies displayed on screen.

Project had its premiere in March during 2nd Festivity of Silent Movies in Warsaw cinema Iluzion.

The idea of joining contemporary music with projections of old films is not original, but as it occured, unusually inspiring for improvising musicans.

First movie was Russian director Lew Kuleshov's 1924 r "Extraordinary adventures of Mr Westa in country of Bolsheviks", which is a satire for Western prejudices against Soviet Russia. Expresive montage was excellently used by accordion Motion Trio raising tension of dramatic and intentionally exaggerated scenes. Most suggestive, though were comic parts in which three accordionists gave a real show of virtuosity and invention, changing motion and fully utilizing sound of instruments. During expressive performance a chair collapsed under lider Janusz Wojtarowicz what gave another, not intentional element of entertainment.

Second was famous "Berlin. Symphony of a Great City" of Walther Ruttmann from 1927 musically illustrated by vocalist Urszula Dudziak and dj Pedro Gonzales. Both used electronics, Dudziak to extend possibilities of her voice, Gonzales to play previously prepared music from computer. Artistic message of this masterpiece of the Movie, characteristic rythm of pictures showing a day of Berliners life were even greater challenge for musicans than soviet comedy. Abundance of ryhms chosen by Pedro Gonzales was perfectly used by Urszula Dudziak. She piled one vocal phrases on another introducing effects of echo and loop, changing sound of the voice. She'd once astonished the world with such effects and now showed that theese are still attractive.

Public gave ovation to her performance.

The longest - 10 week long - Polish Jazz festivity had ended. Though concerts of pianist Cecil Taylor and Wadady Leo Smith trio were cancelled the whole festivity were extraordinary rich in artistic events. We could have listen to most admired musicans : Pat Metheny, Bobby McFerrin and Dave Douglas. Joe Zawinul and John Scofield gave free concerts.

Organizators announced that next year festival will be shorter.
