Dreams comes true

- says JANUSZ WOJTAROWICZ, lider of Motion Trio, before the gala concert of XI International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music and the planned concert in Carnegie Hall.

- We are talking on August 8, because You just dropped in for a day and a half to Krakow.

- I just got back from the short vacation over the Polish sea.

- In a while Motion Trio again sets off.

- Starting from Krotoszyn. Poland - a large folk festival for thousands of people, then Nurnberg, and a huge Sziged Festival in Budapst, where rock groups will perform, including the legendary Locomotiv GT, but also metal groups Cesaria Evora, Pink, Sinéad O'Connor - a couple days event for about 100 thousand people. Later on we're returning to Poland, to play on organ festival in Polkowice and flying to Estionia to play contemporary music. From there we're going to festival in Malmö, Sweden.

- This gives a picture how diverse music you play for varied audience.

- We even take three different costumes with us, one for classical concerts, other for rock, and other for generally speaking World music events.

- Which of those costumes do You prefer?

- I'd answer this way: I do not like the same concerts in a row. Thanks to diverse repertoire we are having more fun and reaching the greater group of listeners - one time they are techno fans, other time jazz fans or contemporary music lovers. That keeps us from being categorised and helps us to present accordion as versatile instrument with great possibilities. Beeing in such melting-pot brings youth to philharmonies. Attracted for example with our "Game Over" they have chance to discover and appreciate the beauty of Kilar's "Orava". So I cannot opt for one costume.

- In this most noble one You will appear on September 1st as a guest star of The Eleventh Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music. Seven years ago You have won its Grand Prix. Was it a starting point of Motion Trio's career?

- It gave more professional character, for sure. Earlier we were little known. Thanks to this award we received invitations for festivals and become recognised particularly in classical music world.

- What about other milestones of the past 7 years of Motion Trio?

- There were a lot of them ... First of all consecutively to the Grand Prix the Institute of Art with Ministry of Culture gained new instruments for us. Thanks to that, since 2004 we play on Pigini accordions. This helped us to play with such artists like Bobby McFerrin (W eplayed with Him in Warsaw and Montreal)... Meeting Joe Zawinul - the Master (as I will always call Him) - was important as well. I treat Him as a spiritual patron. Discussions with him - about our music and music in general, about humility in approach to it, about respect to other ensembles - gave me a lot. It was not without meaning that he enabled us to play for five evenings in his Vienna club Birdland in September 2004. Meeting with Krzesimir Debski was also valuable. He rearranged our program for three accordions and symphonic orchestra.

- Your concert in Potsdam with Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg resulted with 15-minute standing ovation. In September You will present the program also with the symphony orchestra in Brasil, Rio de Janeiro...

- ...yes, on the famous Copacabana beach, where Rolling Stones played last year. Although I have no illusions about having such audience.

- What was the largest audience You have ever had?

- About five years ago on S³u¿ewiec, Warsaw, it was an TVN event for 70 thousand people. We were bood. We were told that the sound was bad, but more likely our music was not appropriate, because band playing after us got great ovation. Well, we did not turned out to be a good support for Ich Troje. In return we were received much better on several festivals abroad, just to mention Montreal Jazz Festiwal or Paleo Festiwal with couple thousand audience.

- On January 13th You will play in Carnegie Hall. I can remember like seven years ago You said this was Your dream.

- Well, seems that dreams comes true when one believes strongly. We have couple of spiritual Masters who say that when you send such message up, it gets somewhere high, stays there and an invisible thread guides you to a place you want to reach. The fact that we'll play in Carnegie Hall is a result of couple coincidences - seems that trully a higher force guides us, because we are having a lot of luck recently.

- Then you added "I am giving 10 years for that..." it came true after seven.

- I love seven and attach magical meaning to it. I can remember also that then I got frightened with the name Carnegie Hall and added "or other prestigeous hall". Our main goal was promotion of accordion around the world, riping it off pejorative associations and qualifications (like common in Poland: creaser, pig, radiator, etc) and proving its sound capabilities and application in any type of music.

- What will you play in Carnegie Hall?

- Music of Penderecki, Górecki, Kilar and own pieces, as i call them, but please write eloquently - compositions. We wish to dedicate the concert to our accordion guru who died in age of forty - Andrzej Krzanowski, the stipendiary of Witold Lutos³awski, student of Henryk Miko³aj Górecki. Alas, early death broke the career of the composer. Dedicating the concert to him we wish to emphasize the fact that the renesaince of the accordion begun many years ago in Poland.

- You will play compositions of Penderecki, Górecki, Kilar on September 1st in Krakow Philharmony during the gala concert.

- It is going to be a presentation of what we will perform in New York, but the program varies. We will play Penderecki's "De profundis" already presented in Los Angeles in May, Kilar's "Orawa" that we keep playing for a long time and Górecki's "Trzy utwory w dawnym stylu" (Three compositions in old style) which played on three accordions sound better than by symphonic orchestra.

- Years ago, You were dreaming of Carnegie Hall, what do You dream about now?

- ...We no longer think of particular hall, but of reaching with our music to wise, inteligent and sensitive people, and of promoting accordion and Polish music. If we achieve this, we'll be very happy.

- So what is Your dream?

- Our dreams do not range next seven years. The closest is that listeners like our record comming out in October.

- It will be available in Empik stores, this is new in your case. Until now Motion Trio's records were easier available abroad than in Poland, just to mention "Pictures From The Street" and "Play-Station", released by German Asphalt Tango and British Harmonia Mundi, and distributed in 30 countries around the world. You are better known outside Your country.

- Not only us, as you know. Now we would like to change this.

- On October 26th in Krakow cinema "Kijów" You will be promoting the new record - "Metropolis", which on that day will appear in stores.

- Three days earlier during the concert at Fabryka Trzciny - it will have premiere in Warsaw. We'd also like to celebrate our 10 years anniversary with those concerts.

- After a decade - having a position in music world, having leading masters cources on american universities, having performed on many significant festivals, and having played in 28 countries - do You see Motion Trio's future bright?

- Certainly, after years of work, having such mentors, being surrounded with people who help us, like Zosia Beklen, who couple of years ago layed out her own money to release our record "Live in Vienna", we look calmly to the future. And more consequently we want to do our thing. Of course there is a joy from what we have achieved, but I do know our imperfection, which is essential impulse for further work. No need to be too modest, but listening to the recordings of McFerrin, Zimerman or music of Shostakovich I can see how humble person am I. And this is an attitude I advice to all who are considering their fame.
