Tunes never heard before

Motion Trio experiments with accordion in „Brotfabrik”

"Traditional accordionists run out of ideas. Our goal is to extract new tunes from accordion" says Janusz Wojtarowicz, creative leader of Motion Trio.Born in 1971 composer and virtuoso is self confident: "Other instruments are exploited, accordion is beeing discovered and now new experiments come to life". Actions follow the strong words in very first tacts by classically educated trio from Cracow.

Seemingly well known "sailors pianos", here speak brand new language, painting with sound. Even other instruments may be heard.

Bringing out versatility of accordion takes sovereign musicans no computer tricks but pure manual proficiency and unlimited immagination.

Clear will of creation, hidden pleasure of quotation and fascinating confidence of style - that is the style of the Trio.

In calm part of the concert in „Brotfabrik” hall - sold to the last ticket – musicians using nuances subtely increase tension and at the same time pay a tribute to the music of Johan Sebastian Bach. Later it is getting more rythmical and energetic. Except inevitable hommage to tango nuevo sounds classical modernism, Far East and Kimmo Pohjonen - Finish rewolutionary of accordion. Lively unisonos separate for two individual voices, in neverending loop remains stoic phrase, over subtle harmonies of the second accordion rises solo of the third, which imperceptibly changes roles with the first.

A little of "Polish soul" transparents in tragicomic, but never melodramatic moments. Folk conotations are rare as tacts of polka. Similairly as other allegedly known motives glitters delusively to melt in the sea of still notes and swinging similar to staccato. Accumulation of layers and transformations based on repetitions recall minimalism and the music seems to abstract hipnotic net of spider from „Music for 18 Musicians” by Steve Reicha. Trio plays superbly by means of suggestive sound. In high parts accordions sound like strings, in other like classical and sometimes thunder seriously like organs.

Almost by the way musicans quote tunes of their generation from techno to gameboy and with somnambulc confidence avoid the superficial. Not without reason Trio is honoured internationally, despite it is different from the stereotype of educated musicans. When in 1996 Janusz Wojtarowicz founded the Trio, Pawe Baranek was only 18, and Marcin Gaayn - 21.

Motion Trio consequently bets on own inspiration. Perfection and maestry drives the music smoothly incrustated with tiny motives synchronized with melodic and bass lines, solos filled with discords but based on romantic harmonies or changing tempos, which is a secret of consequent work.

In the cycle "Krakow nad Menem" organized by partner cities of Frankfurt and Cracow during Days of Polish Culture under protectorate of European Central Bank, Motion Trio represents young, progresive music scene. Similarly as some recognizes Polish jazz musicans, Motion Trio determines own level even abroad even if newly released studio album „Pictures from the Street” sounds more traditionally than a glorious concert, which forced even most distinguished public to ovation.
