You don't often hear the words "accordion" and "video game" in the same sentence. You will now. Today's Global Hit features an accordion band from Poland that's got a thing for video game soundtracks. The band's name is "Motion Trio" and The World's Helen Barrington has their story.
"Motion Trio's" new CD is called "Play Station" after the well known video game console. Several of the tracks on this album are based on game soundtracks. This one is called Helicopter.
The idea came from one of the group's members, who was addicted to the games when he was young. Band leader Janusz Wojtarowicz says using these kinds of themes fits with his vision of using the accordion in new ways. He also wants to overcome the instrument's stereotypical associations. Like the one with polka.
Wojtarowicz: "It's the synonym. Accordion polka, accordion wedding, accordion and ah a lot of accordion jokes." Wojtarowicz loves to experiment and take chances.
That's one reason he abandoned his conservatory studies in Krakow.
And he says he and his band-mates took lots of chances on this CD.
Wojtarowicz: "It's very funny if you use accordion as a computer, you know, as a gambling machine, you don't know the final result. You win or you fault. When we was working on this material it was very very funny for us to preparing games for three accordions like UFO, like Helicopter, like Fly, like game over, of course."
But Motion Trio's music isn't just about video games. Take the tune "Yellow Trabant."
Wojtarowicz: "Trabant is the symbol of East German motor industry. This car was very very popular in Poland in 80s and 70s, before the transformations, politic transformation. So Yellow Trabi, when we are playing this piece, I have imaginations of Poland and Polish road in 80s and beginning of 90s."
Wojtarowicz has high aspirations for "Motion Trio." He hopes the band will one day collaborate with musicians from all over the world. Wojtarowicz says he's actively seeking partners.
Wojtarowicz: "Musicians who are open for a lot of styles in music who want to show and present the accordion as it has never been heard before. And this is the main task. And I suppose, our biggest dream, to play in Carnegie Hall, will come," laughs.
And Motion Trio's gotten close. The band performed in New York City in November. And Wojtarowicz says he keeps a hopeful eye on the Carnegie Hall web site.
For The World, I'm Helen Barrington. << PreviousNext >>
